From New York Times bestselling romance author Kasey Michaels comes the third in her Love in the Regency series.
There are not many men who can say they attended their own funeral, but Brady James, Earl of Singleton is no ordinary man. He's also, happily, not a dead man, which he is certain was the object of the trio of scoundrels who had lately tied him up and tossed him headfirst into the Thames.
Of course, there's also the matter of why he'd been skulking about the bowels of London after midnight, and her name is Regina Bliss. Mysterious, with an ability to lie that would shame the devil himself, Regina is a recent rescue from the London streets, and Brady has taken it into his head to find out where the dratted girl came from... and why she bothers him so.
To accomplish his aim, Brady needs to return to London, but certainly not as himself (that would be awkward), and he needs the irritating Miss Bliss to come with him. What to do? Why, he could pretend to be his own heir -- a totally worthless, chuckleheaded moron of a dandy he'd rather die (again) to keep from the earldom.
It could work. It should work. If only he could get past his attraction for Miss Bliss as she, horror of horrors, teaches him how to play the fop.

Then Comes Marriage Love in the Regency Book 3 edition by Kasey Michaels Romance eBooks
I've enjoyed the other books in the series but this one not so much. I usually love this author's work but this one required too many leaps of imagination. Our H is an earl and we met and liked him in the previous books. He encountered the h when she was working as a maid for the h in the previous book. Our h is a mystery lady and no one is clear where she originally comes from or who she really is. This was a good premise and I had high hopes. Unfortunately as I said before, I didn't enjoy quite a few things about the story.+++Spoilers+++
Fundamentally I didn't enjoy the fact that the h was such a liar. Her big secrets fell flat for me and I just didn't care in the end. I know romance stories always require an element of fancy but for an Earl to marry the daughter of actors in that period was already a leap but then for him to be entertaining them in his house later and then them going off in their caravan to perform was too much for me. The h herself I think was far more suited to being a mistress in both her behaviour and attitude than to being a countess. They had a fairly open sexual relationship (not at all fitting for the period) before the h runs off without a thought of falling pregnant etc.
Perhaps I made the mistake of reading the second and third in the series too close together but this one is nowhere near as good as 'Someone to Love'

Then Comes Marriage Love in the Regency Book 3 edition by Kasey Michaels Romance eBooks Reviews
Fantastic story by one of my favorite authors - Kasey Michaels. Brady James, Earl of Singleton, is a nice, handsome aristocrat whose two best friends have recently made happy marriages (Bramwell Seaton, Duke of Selbourne from "Indiscreet" and Kipp Rutland from "Someone to Love"). Brady just happens to have a reputation for putting his nose into other people's business. Most recently, he has taken it upon himself to check out the background and "story" of a young lady who was rescued from a life on the streets of London by Kipp's wife, Abby, and placed into their household as a maid.
**Spoilerish - although mostly elaborating a bit on what the reader will find in the book description and within the first few pages of the book**
Brady believes this young woman, who calls herself Regina Bliss, isn't who or what she says she is, further, he thinks lying comes as easily to her as blinking her beautiful grey eyes and is determined to learn the truth. He has even gone so far as to travel to her purported hometown to make inquiries. He isn't satisfied with what he has learned so far and is further determined to get the whole story.
One evening, while the somewhat bored Brady is walking home from a social event, even as he is considering the state of his not-so-enjoyable life, he is accosted and severely beaten by three men - apparently gentlemen - based on their speech. He is then placed inside a bag which is weighted down by a chain and tossed into the Thames. Although he is seriously damaged, he manages to cut his way out of the bag and drag himself far enough to hail a hackney.
Having faced death, Brady has a sort of epiphany about the direction his life was taking. He resolves then and there to fully recuperate, have his vengeance upon those who attempted to kill him and also begins to take a long hard look at what is important in life. Persuaded that the attempt on his life is somehow related to the mysterious Regina Bliss and the fact he was checking up on her background, Brady is determined to gain her assistance in his endeavors to find those responsible and in the process, assist her in righting her own life. To this end, Brady enlists the aid of his good friends, Bram and Sophia, to deceive London Society into believing he drowned in the Thames.
The fun begins when Brady and Regina decide that he will go back into society disguised as a silly foppish cousin and heir - Gawain Caradoc. There are lots of laughs but more importantly, there is a sweet romance played out against the background of all the antics. Yes, romance - but just as important, the friendship between Brady and Regina becomes a vital part of their relationship and ultimate love. Great read. Thank you Ms. Michaels.
This is such a sweet story!!! I love it! I don't mean sweet as in lacking passion since it does have at least one explicit love scene, but the main people are so kind and loving that it makes the reader happy to see out it all turns out.
Brady James, Earl of Singleton, is the third of a group of men friends each of whom have been featured in one of the books in the "Love in the Regency" series. In the first book Bram Seaton, Duke of Selbourne, found his true love; in the second Kipp Rutland, Viscount Willoughby, found the love of his life. I haven't read the first book but I have read the second one so I first met Brady as he assisted in the romance between Kipp and Abby in the previous story. I liked him then and thought he was a really nice person to know and a good friend to them. This book follows on some of the things that happened in book two.
While strolling in London Kipp and Abby had walked to Covent Garden because Abby had read about it in a tour book and wanted to see the huge fresh air market she has read about. They got there a little late in the day and many of the merchants had left, it was a mess, and smelled of cabbage and manure. Abby was distracted by a little crippled blind girl who was selling home made dolls. The lady with her appeared to be her mother or at least in control of her, and the girl had sores and bruises all over her small misshapen body. Abby immediately wanted to attack the lady for treating her that way and offered the girl a home at Kipp's house--which shocked Kipp. But being the noble man he was he stood up for her and bargained with the lady to take the girl off her hands. At that point the girl spoke up and said she hadn't been abused, straightened her crooked legs, looked directly at them to show she wasn't blind, and apologised for her charade. She told them she had come to London looking for a job, couldn't find one, ended up living on the street and the lady had taken her in and protected her. Abby insisted she come home with them and learn to be a maid which the girl was happy to do. Once they got her cleaned up Abby realised the "girl" was actually a young woman of at least 19, spoke very good English as well as French, could read and write, and able to make friends easily with the other staff. They wondered where she had come from and their friend Brady was especially curious because he found her attractive. Since they were sure she was lying Brady decided to go to the town where she said she was from and see what he could find out. No one seemed to know her but he left his card in several places and asked to be notified if anyone remembered anything about her.
This book opens after her returned to London. He had been at a party and grew bored now that his two best friends were married and more interested in their growing families than partying with him. He decided to walk home to clear his head and told his driver to go on home. It was foggy and getting worse and before he realized it he had taken a couple of wrong turns and was lost. While trying to figure out where he was three men jumped him and beat him unconscious. They put a burlap bag over him and fastened it with chains and locks. He started to wake up while in a wagon and overheard them planning how they would kill him then what they would do for the rest of the night. He realized they seemed to be cultured men and he noticed before passing out that they were dressed well. Whenever he moved they would kick him until he passed out again so he laid still and tried to plan his escape. Unfortunately for him, there wasn't one. He felt himself thrown into the Thames choking on the dirty water. The bag was chained too tight for him to reach the knife in his boot but he had a special leather lined pocket in his coat with a small knife in it. Just when he thought he couldn't hold his breath any more he was able to cut through the bag and swim to the surface to get air. His nose was broken as was his right arm and three ribs. He managed to find a ride home and was secreted out of London by his loyal butler.
At his country home he was ill for days from the nasty river water, feverish, with broken bones, and every part of him in pain. Why had this happened? Who had he made angry enough to want him dead? While almost drowning he had re-evaluated his life and realized he had no purpose, had never done anything that would be remembered, no one would mourn him except maybe Bram and Kipp. And he was scared. How could he go back to London not knowing who was trying to kill him? Did it have anything do with the questions he had been asking about the girl? He had nothing but time to ruminate over this because he was so ill he wouldn't be able to get out of his bed for a long time. So he asks that his friends send the girl to his home so he can ask her some questions. But since she lies at the drop of a hat, what is he to believe? Who is she? Is she in danger too? Can she help him find out who tried to kill him?
Her name is Regina and she is hiding many secrets. She knows not to trust men of the ton. She knows they all lie and she has to keep her secrets to protect herself. And there is someone she has to kill. Maybe Singleton can help find the man since he moves in the same circles of society.
That is how it starts. Neither of them trust the other, but they need each other for their own purposes. Brady decides he has to stay dead and the new Earl, a distant cousin no one knows will take his place. With Regina's help he will find who tried to kill him and get his revenge. And with the Earl's help Regina will find the man she is looking for and end his life as the man ended the lives of her loved ones.
And they have lots of fun on the way. The Earl is charming, Regina is beautiful, you know they have to fall in love. There are lots of plot twists I didn't see coming and I love to be surprised. There is always the threat that Brady's plans will backfire and the ton will never forgive him for his subterfuge. Will he end up ostracized? Would it be worth it to have Regina's love?
I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review and I'm very grateful for the chance to read it. It is a great story and worth spending money on.
