Angharad "Harry" Russo has had to adjust to some major changes in her life. Her computer is haunted, she accidentally acquired a vampire servant, and she's attracted to the most aggravating alpha male on the planet. Her friend betrayed her, a lunatic tried to sacrifice her to raise a god, and she accidentally "outed" herself to the Magister, the most powerful vampire in town. What else could go wrong? Oh yeah, she's just discovered that her father is a vampire and her dhamphiric powers are emerging prematurely. Poor Harry doesn't know what weird ability could pop up next.

When werewolves start to go missing, and two young men die suspiciously, not to mention horrifically, Harry believes it's all connected. It could be a hunch, or it could be the big, gray wolf that stepped out of her dreams to haunt her waking moments; either way, Harry knows that she needs to help solve the mystery. Now if she could just convince the sexy police detective, Cian Nash, to take her seriously.

Tooth and Claw Harry Russo Diaries Series Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Lisa Emme Dara Rosenberg Tantor Audio Books

I read the first book in the Harry Russo series, and even though it was flawed with character, dialogue, and plot missteps, it was an easy read that made me think I might enjoy the sequel. I was wrong.

These are just a few of the problems I had with the follow-up book:

I am tired of authors not writing stand alone stories. Nothing really was resolved in the first novel, and now this one also ends in a cliffhanger. I understand that some authors think this is good marketing but it isn't. If someone thinks enough of the world you've built, that person will likely buy another book without you resorting to a gimmick.

I understand the main character is young, even though she's a business owner, but having her stick her tongue out at people and constantly engaging in fist-pumping is just stupid behavior. She also gets into inane arguments with friends/foes at ridiculous moments. It's not comic relief. Stop it.

Harry's total obliviousness to plot points makes her appear really, really dumb. She's supposed to have super duper turbo powers, but she can't think her way out of any situation and needs to have it all spelled out for her, usually by a male character. She should be much more savvy than she is.

By far the most egregious errors surround the character of Cian Nash, the misogynistic yet HOT love interest. He bosses the main character around, tells her to stay out of trouble/danger, to the point that he handcuffs her to keep her out of danger -- in the middle of a major magical fight! Seriously, did he think the bad guys would just ignore the lady in handcuffs for her own protection? Get it together, that was insulting to the main character.

Then we come to the main character thinking of sex in the middle of a dire situation. Wait, the evil guy chained her to Cian with magic chains? Oh no, but wait, he's so hot that I can't help thinking about his body. Really? I doubt anyone would be thinking about sex while they were fighting for their lives and the lives of their friends and family.

Maybe I am too picky, maybe my standards are too high. I am always looking for new authors and new ideas, but I am frequently disappointed. I have found some gems among the new and self-published authors, though, so I will keep looking. I do try to leave honest reviews as I go, because there are so many poor books with glowing five star reviews that mislead and misrepresent the quality of the content.

Tooth and Claw Harry Russo Diaries Series Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Lisa Emme Dara Rosenberg Tantor Audio Books Reviews

Harry is a heroine of the Rock'em Sock'em Robots variety. Think Modesty Blaise meets Anita Blake dancing with Mercy Thompson. Only Harry isn't a shape shifter, she's a dhampir necromancer, hedge witch, florist, medium. A well rounded girl who's been mated to a werewolf, who, oops, forgot to ask first.

Life is complicated and it's just going to keep going for the twists. Harry's diaries are addictive, you can't just read one... Thank heavens I didn't dive in this pool until after multiple releases. This way I don't have to camp on Ms Emme's lawn, chasing her back to her desk every time she tried to do anything but write diaries.
I have read the three books in this series. This review is the same for all three.

The good I really like Harry, the protagonist. She's very caring with both her friends and strangers in need. She asserts herself to defend them. She has strong opinions. She works hard to run her own business. She's a bit confused about her self identity, but she's only 24. I like the world, and the interesting characters she lives with or befriends. The pacing and action are pretty good.

The bad Nash, the boyfriend, is an unpleasant caricature. He's handsome, and has chiseled abs. However, his personality is a motley collection of the worst traits men can have. He's paranoid, jealous, and possessive to the point of psychosis. He is extremely aggressive, and takes whatever he wants. He is incapable of understanding "No" as an answer. He reacts to any opposition or slight with insane bouts of rage and physical violence. He's not very intelligent, but his arrogance prevents him from even noticing anyone else's warnings, advice or ideas. He assumes he can give orders to everyone, without having any qualifications. Although 46 years old, he behaves like a spoiled child. He has obviously never worked for anything in his life, even his muscular physique is the result of being born a werewolf, not hard work. Outside of his obsession with Harry, the character is entirely two dimensional. He has no interests, hobbies, or friends.

The ugly Their "relationship" is grossly unhealthy. His attraction to her is pure obsession, not love. Her attraction is purely physical. He seeks to possess her, not be with her. He has no interest in learning anything about her, nor in sharing anything. He grants her absolutely no respect, ignoring her desires and choices. Through his pigheaded rejection of her advice, he repeatedly places her in danger. He orders her around, and punishes disobedience with intimidation, browbeating, or in one case physical spanking. A little mutually agreed upon ass slapping can be OK during amorous activities. However, he cannot comprehend that NO means NO, and he ignores her complaints, to go beyond what she found acceptable. The only thing that differentiates his actions from kidnapping and rape is that she seems to enjoy it and forgive him afterwards. If she had not acquiesced, I have no doubt he would have raped her. I quickly started wishing she would get a restraining order against him.
